In December 1989, the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR announced a competition to find designs for kroon banknotes and coins. The result was that the 1- and 2-kroons were designed by Urmas Ploompuu and the larger bills by Vladimir Taiger. The coins were a bit more complicated. The design of the coins, which finally came into circulation, was completed in cooperation between Paul Luhteina, Arseni Mölder and Ants Raud. However, before that, coins with a cornflower designed by Mari Käbin, who was successful in the competition, were tried out. The coins were minted at RE Juveel. The number of coins is unknown, there are stories about “a few copies” to the “a whole batch”
